Caesalpinia pulcherrima, commonly known as the Red Bird of Paradise, Pride of Barbados, or Peacock Flower, is a flamboyant, fast-growing ornamental shrub or small tree celebrated for its vividly colored blossoms and graceful, airy foliage. Native to the tropics of the Americas but widely cultivated throughout warm regions of the world, it thrives in full sun and high heat, displaying remarkable drought tolerance once established. The plant typically reaches 2–4 meters in height and forms an open, spreading habit with finely divided, fern-like bipinnate leaves that lend a delicate texture to the landscape. Its spectacular flowers—produced from late spring through fall in warm climates—feature bright red, orange, or yellow petals with elongated, showy stamens that extend outward like plumes, attracting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. These blooms appear in upright clusters at the tips of the branches and are often followed by flat, reddish-brown seed pods characteristic of the legume family. Despite its exotic appearance, Caesalpinia pulcherrima is relatively low-maintenance, adapting well to poor or rocky soils and tolerating coastal conditions, although it benefits from occasional pruning to maintain shape and encourage heavier flowering. In tropical and subtropical landscapes, it is widely used as a focal point or accent plant, adding vibrant color and a sense of movement, and in some cultures its parts have been used historically in traditional remedies. Highly ornamental, resilient, and long-blooming, the species remains a favorite among gardeners seeking dramatic, tropical flair with minimal water requirements.
